Novo Nordisk Shuts Internal Cell Therapy Unit, Licenses Parkinson's Asset to AI Platform as Stock Gains 24.9%

Novo Nordisk is closing its internal cell therapy program and licensing a Parkinson's asset to an AI-driven discovery platform, even as its stock climbs 24.9% over 30 days. The move reflects a broader pivot: pharma incumbents are reallocating R&D capital toward AI foundation-model platforms like NVIDIA BioNeMo and MindWalk's HYFT rather than building discovery capability internally.

Novo Nordisk is closing its internal cell therapy unit while licensing a Parkinson's disease asset to Cellular Intelligence, an AI-driven drug discovery platform.1 The move comes as Novo Nordisk's core business posts strong earnings and a 24.9% 30-day stock gain, evidence investors see the outsourcing as additive, not a retreat.1

The shift points to a wider capital reallocation across pharma. Incumbents are cutting internal discovery programs and buying access to AI foundation-model platforms instead of building the technology in-house.

NVIDIA is positioning itself as the connective tissue for that transition, running lab-in-the-loop partnerships that link wet-lab experiments to its BioNeMo models.2 A cluster of rival "bio-native AI" platforms is emerging alongside it: Basecamp Research's EDEN, Boltz Lab, Owkin's OwkinZero, and Edison Scientific's Kosmos. Each is positioning as infrastructure for drug discovery, not a single-molecule bet.

MindWalk Holdings is among the platforms courting that infrastructure role. Its HYFT technology is built on roughly 660 million biological patterns, described as universal fingerprints encoding conserved relationships between sequence, structure, and function.3

MindWalk recently filed patent EP26187897.9, which the company says adds a computational layer on top of its foundational HYFT patent, EP3881326A1, rather than re-filing it.3 The new filing organizes biological meaning around identified patterns "into a form reusable across MindWalk's infrastructure, customer programs, and AI workflows," the company said.3

MindWalk's underlying wager is that representation of biology, not just prediction, is "the hard part, and the place to build a durable advantage," the company said.2

For pharma incumbents, the calculus is shifting from build-versus-buy to license-versus-own. Novo Nordisk's earnings reaction suggests markets are rewarding that shift rather than penalizing it.
